Sergi Sanchez lives in Spain where he works as an illustrator and animator.  That's him there in the wetsuit.

Chief Magazine: What's Madrid like these days?

Sergi Sanchez: Well, I don't know that much about Madrid these days because I am based in Barcelona, but it’s a nice place to eat squid sandwiches in “Plaza Mayor” and visit some good friends.

Oh.  Well then… how’s Barcelona these days?

It is nice, you can realize the new season just started because i got the impression of lot of new things going on like exhibitions, projects etc... That means ciao! ciao! summer time!  Everyone is back, like kids in school, which is fine. I think Barcelona its a nice place to meet people from different parts and slightly get into the routine of the city.

You seem to work a lot with text in your illustrations.  How does the text work into your process?

Sometimes it’s a good song lyric that gave me the right inspiration or the right mood or just thinking about what a friend of mine told me or what I heard from people in the street, for example, it’s funny how a woman in the street market can sell you a giant pumpkin by just screaming something funny with an incomprehensible accent... “Venga niña que se me lo llevan de las maaaaaaaaaaaaaanos!” I found that so interesting.  At the end, text works at the same level as the image to explain an idea, it depends which one comes first.

3.jpgI find your work to be funny but dark.  How would you describe your work?

Well, I think its all about how I see people, they are capable to love or hate, it’s inside us, we have both behaviors. We can destroy an entire culture or build a spaceship.
In my work I try to use humor because I think it can contain or combine both sides and it’s much better to laugh.

What pays the bills?

(Laughing.)  My work.  I’m still trying to work with my ideas and drawings and that is my only source of money.
Although I had a period where I got  my own “medici patronage”
from my sister Rosa Maria.
4.jpgWhat about that video you made with Lorenzo Fonda not long ago?

That was a good one! We were just being really dumb as Lorenzo wrote in his web site.  Actually, it was a great experience because we had been working together, sharing a great time, first in Milan and after in Barcelona. We met in Fabrica, the Benetton center, and at that time I was leaving so we never worked together so we met again after a year and we did all that mess.

What's next?

Make my website at least, travel to meet new people and visit my friends, to keep working and have
fun with all of them.1.jpg
